Eight scouts, along with four adult leaders, traveled to Philmont Scout Camp in New Mexico during the summer and spent 10 days hiking trails and participating in various activities. Brandon Whittle, Charlie Hoffman, Wilson Utley, Gannon Albrecht, Adam Kirby, Aric Helmandollar, Truman Elbert and Michael Witten were the scouts participating and were accompanied by adults Phil Hoffman, Dr. Bruce Whittle Glenn Kirby and Travis Elbert.
The 65-mile trail included stops each evening, where the scouts camped and participated in various activities, such as finding their way along a trail without a compass and exploring as well as taking part in a conservation project that included felling trees and cutting them into logs. The local group had a “sister crew” that took the same trail and participated in the same activities. Brandon Whittle, who served as spokesperson for the group, said the scouts learned that they could work together in any situation and that it was a good experience and one they will remember for many years.
Phil Hoffman, who introduced the group, noted that he had hiked Philmont as a scout in 1966, along with fellow Rotarians Russell Joiner and Charles Hoffman, who went as adult leaders.
