The NCMC start was as cold as the winds whipping through Grimes Field as Southwestern posted four runs in the top of the first inning. The score remained 4-0 until the bottom of the third. The Pirates pushed two runs across the plate in both the third and fourth to tie the game at 4-4. Southwestern responded with two runs in the fifth, but a six-run outburst by the Pirates in the sixth inning gave them a 10-6 lead they would not lose. Southwestern made the final inning interesting, scoring two runs, but the rally was cut short as the Pirates held on for the victory.
The Pirates’ 10 runs came on nine hits and two Southwestern errors, while the visitors garnered eight runs on seven hits and three NCMC errors. Curtis Hicks was the winning pitcher for North Central, moving to 1-2 on the season. There was no save.
In game two, North Central went to the lead early, scoring a lone run in both the first and second innings. Southwestern tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Pirates responded with another run in the bottom of the frame. Southwestern tied the game again in the top of the sixth, but the Pirates won the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh, scoring another single run to gain the win.
Casey Savage was the winning pitcher for the Pirates, who scored their four runs on seven hits and four Southwestern errors. Southwestern, meanwhile, scored its three runs on five hits and three North Central errors.
The two wins moved the Pirates to 5-14 and North Central has now won three straight games.
