Donald Ray Fulkerson, an 85-yer-old resident of Newton, IA, died on Friday morning, Dec. 3, 2010 in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home at Newton. A family visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be held at a later date at the Edinburg IOOF Cemetery.
Mr. Fulkerson was born on Jan. 20, 1925 in Trenton, the son of Clarence Samuel and Bessie H. Hoskins Fulkerson. He graduated in 1943 from Trenton High School. He was married on Sept. 18. 1949 at Ridgeway to Mary Louise Sullivan, who survives of the home.
Mr. Fulkerson served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had worked as a farmer, an assistant at the Johnson Funeral Home in Newton, a construction worker for 16 years and retired in 1989 from Maytag Company after 18-plus years of service.
He was a member of the Jamesport United Methodist church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, gunmaking, growing roses and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Douglas Ray Fulkerson of Newton; a daughter Marta Louise Poots and her husband, Todd, of Huxley, IA; three grandsons, Preston Bond Poots, Matthew Todd Poots and Clayton John Poots; a sister, Lucille Smith of Brimson; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Cricket.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lowell Bond Fulkerson; and a sister, Celia Fulkerson Spillman.
The family suggests memorials to the Hospice of Jasper County and the Jasper County Courthouse Lighting Fund.
