Trenton’s defense was solid throughout the game as was the pitching. David Claycomb got the start on the hill and went five innings allowing just one hit. TJ Ireland came on in the sixth and pitched the final two frames. Ireland gave up two hits, and no runs as he preserved the shutout with his first save of the season. Claycomb was awarded the win establishing himself a 1-0 record on the season.
Offensively, the Blue Jays scored just one run, but that was enough to get the win. The run came when a Blue Jay runner reached base on an error. Two batters later, Trenton got a hit that scored the runner and gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish.
The Blue Jays completed the sweep in game two with a 5-2 victory.
Ricky Wilson got the start and threw the first three innings. Brookfield scored one unearned run in the first three innings, but the Blue Jays’ offense came to life and gave Trenton a lead after three. TJ Hietz stepped on to the hill in the fourth inning and preserved the win. Wilson took the win, making him 1-0 on the season.
Wilson also had a good day at the plate, leading the Blue Jay offense with four hits in the two games.
The sweep established a 2-0 record for the Blue Jays to start the season.
Manager Doug Fairley, who is in his second year at the helm of the Blue Jays, was pleased with his team’s performance in the opening games of the season.
“We were happy with how the kids played,” Fairley said. “With the field renovations in Trenton we haven’t been able to get much infield practice in, but we played well defensively. I’d also like to thank NCMC for letting us use their indoor facility. We have got a lot of swings in and our bats are well ahead of where they were at this point last season.”
The Blue Jays will look to continue to ride their early season momentum on Saturday when they travel to Macon for a double header. The first pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
