Nina Opal Cox, a 104-year-old resident of Mercer, died on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006 at Pearl’s II Eden for Elders at Princeton.

30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, 2006 at the Mercer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robin Banion officiating. Burial will be in the Lowry Cemetery, east of Mercer, under the direction of the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Home.
Visitation begins at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton. A family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Cox was born on Jan. 9, 1902 in Mercer county, the daughter of Francis Marion and Martha Elenor Jennison Brees. She was married on June 23, 1923 to John Burton Cox, who preceded her in death on June 3, 1975.
She lived most of her life in Mercer County, teaching rural schools in the early 1920s. She returned to the classroom for six more terms during World War II, the last four terms in her home district of Brush College. Due to her husband’s health, they moved in September 1974 from their farm, where they had lived for over 40 years, to Mercer.
She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, reading and writing poetry, doing handwork and wrote two family history books and a short story. She was an active member of the Mercer United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday School superintendent, administrative board member, taught the adult Sunday School class for several years and was a charter member of the United Methodist Women Fellowship.
She is survived by a daughter,, Marilyn Edythe Alley, who resided near her home in Mercer; five grandchildren, John Mullins of Springfield, Cheryl Martin and her husband, Roland, of Rea, Michael Alley of Pagosa Springs, CO, Tom Alley of St. Joseph and Sandra Stevens and her husband, Randy, of Trenton; 19 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including her niece, Helen Marie Brees, who lived next door and helped with her care.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Jeanne Mullins on Nov 8, 1995; two sons-in-law, Lloyd Alley and Nolan Mullins; a granddaughter, Nina Diane Alley; a granddaughter-in-law, Pat Mullins; three great-grandchildren; four sisters; and six brothers.
