The Grundy County Commission held its regular weekly meeting Monday, discussing the decision to hire a general contractor to make repairs at the courthouse and setting the date for the annual tax rate levy hearing.
Commissioners said they want the public to understand that although they advertised for proposals to serve as general contractor for the repair work, only one was received and it was from TCI Roofing of Bonner Springs, KS. While three local contractors did discuss the repairs and the request for proposals with the commission, none submitted a proposal. Commissioners also want to make it clear that TCI has been told that materials need to be purchased locally for the project, which will include the replacement of the roof, guttering and all windows in the courthouse. The roof, guttering and several windows were damaged during the May hail storm, but a $40,000 low-interest loan from the Department of Natural Resources has been secured to pay to have all the windows replaced, a project that has been needed for some time. The interest on the loan is 3.75 percent and the funds will be paid back over a 16-year period, with an annual estimated payment of $3,400, which is the estimated energy cost savings the new windows will provide.
In other business today, the commission set the annual tax rate levy hearing for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17 in the commission room. The proposed tax rate for 2004 is .2312 on the $100 assessed valuation, which is the maximum and would generate approximately $209,000. The 2003 levy was .1371 on the $100 assessed valuation.
