Students in the Spickard R-2 School District will not start school in their building this year after a support wall in the basement collapsed this week.

According to Board of Education Secretary Nancy Stewart, the building is now closed until the district’s insurance carrier can assess the damage to the wall and decide what can be done with the building. Mrs. Stewart said the board will be meeting in the near future to discuss its options, which are to repair the damage, construct a new building or close the school permanently and send students to other districts. Approximately 62 students in grades kindergarten through eight attend the school, with high school students living in the district having the option of attending either Trenton High School or Princeton High School.

Board members have met with Bob Trickel of Trickel Construction, who said the building can be repaired, but he did not know what the cost would be because he is unsure of the structural damage that has been sustained. Mrs. Stewart said she believes the insurance carrier will send a structural engineer to look at the damage and after that is completed, a cost estimate would be available.

Mrs. Stewart said that even if a decision is made to repair the building, students in the district will not be able to begin classes there this fall. Board members will be meeting early next week to make decisions and will then announce a public meeting to inform patrons of their decisions.
