The Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library is hosting a “Minecraft Class” for school-aged students over the Christmas holidays.
Sessions will be held in the youth computer lab on Dec. 27, 30 and Jan. 3 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Participants will learn how to “play, create and build in this cyber world” with several computer activities planned. There is a $28 cost to participate and youth must go online to sign up for a Minecraft account before the class starts (parental approval, an e-mail address and password will be needed). The Minecraft site is https://minecraft.net. Participants must have the sign-in/e-mail address and password with them at the class.
For more information or to ask questions, persons can call Laura or Charity at the library, 359-3577. Class size is limited, so youth are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.
The Grundy County Genealogy Society, with the assistance of the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library, has begun a project to digitize the entire microfilm collection of newspapers on file at the library. The microfilm collection dates back to 1894 and is used extensively in genealogy research.
The digitalization process allows for a more permanent way to maintain the old issues as microfilm does have a useful life and some of the rolls have reached the end and are beginning to deteriorate. Another advantage is the digitized files are available from any internet connection and location and the database can be searched within seconds.
Thirty-one reels have been digitized so far with 356 reels remaining at a cost of $95 per reel. Donations are being sought to help digitize the remaining reels and can be done under a person’s name or as a memorial as well as anonymously. Names and memorials will be listed on the library’s carousel. For more information persons can call the library at 359-3577 or view the recently finished copies at http://grundycounty.advantage-preservation.com.
