The Newtown-Harris girls and Grundy R-5 boys were both in action Wednesday night as the Milan Basketball Tournament continued with its third night of action. The Grundy R-5 boys matched up with Brookfield in the boys’ semifinals while Newtown was in girls’ consolation semifinal action against Novinger.

The Grundy boys used a lot of offense in the first half of their match-up with Brookfield in the tournament semifinals to take control of the game early. Grundy scored 25 first-quarter points and tacked on 22 more in the second to take a 47-26 lead at halftime. Grundy outscored Brookfield 13-7 in the third quarter to basically put the game on ice. Brookfield made a run in the fourth, but the Panthers’ lead was never in danger as Grundy held on for the 14-point win.
“The boys played their best basketball of the year for the first three quarters, taking a 60-33 lead into the fourth,” Grundy Head Coach Les Jackson said.
Leading the way for Grundy was Clayton Radcliff, who scored 19 points. Destin Gann added 17 points and seven rebounds and Cade Mullenix had 11 points, eight assists and four steals. Grundy also got nine points, 11 rebounds and nine assists from Mason Alley and seven points from Stuart Eller.
With the win the Panthers moved to 8-3 on the season and punched their ticket to the championship game where they await the winner of tonight’s Novinger-Newtown-Harris semifinal game. The championship game will be played Saturday in Milan at 6:30 p.m.

The Newtown-Harris Lady Tigers kept their trophy hopes alive, advancing to the tournament’s consolation game with an impressive 15-point win over Novinger.
The Lady Tigers were led by Abby Wells who scored 21 points. Becca Johnson added 12 for the Lady Tigers while Roni Busick and Paige Thompson scored eight and seven points respectively.
With the win the Newtown girls moved to 4-9 on the season. The Lady Tigers will play for the consolation title on Friday at 5 p.m. in Milan.
