Bulldogs Fall On Last-Second Shot
Everybody in the Ketcham Community Center on Monday afternoon knew Reed Summers was going to take the Richmond Spartans’ last shot as they trailed the Trenton Bulldogs by two points with under 10 seconds remaining. What nobody knew, however, was that Phillip Kincaid would grab a long rebound off Summers’ shot with enough time remaining to fling a three-pointer of his own.
Summers’ shot missed, Kincaid’s did not. The end result was a heartbreaking 46-45 loss for the Bulldogs at Holiday Hoops..
Trenton didn’t exactly do much to help themselves in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs entered the final frame with a 42-34 lead, but hit just one field goal in the entire quarter and tallied another point on a free throw as they were outscored 12-3 over the final eight minutes of the game.
The sudden lack of offense in the final quarter came as a surprise because Trenton had no trouble scoring points in the first three quarters. Trenton executed well on the offensive end, tallying 17 points in the first quarter, 12 in the second and 13 in the third.
“We played our best team basketball of the year today,” Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “(Chris) Flowers was dominant on the inside and (Wilson) Utley really rebounded well. It was a tough way to lose on a last-second shot where the kid was falling down and threw it up. I am excited to see how we use this game to power through our next tough weeks of basketball.
“Our execution offensively and strong teamwork were marks of an incredibly gifted and hard working team. I am very proud of the way they have played the last two games. Despite the fact that we lost, we are much better because of them.”
Flowers led Trenton with a career-high 21 points and six rebounds. Chase Tolson added 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Wilson Utley had seven points and nine rebounds, Colton Neff had three points and Chris Kurtz and Charlie Hoffman each scored two points.
With the loss, Trenton dropped to 6-4 overall on the season.
Both Trenton basketball teams will be in action at Holiday Hoops one final time on Saturday. Both squads will face Lathrop with the Lady Bulldogs tipping off at 4 p.m. and the Bulldogs following at 5:30.
