NCMC Teams On Losing End At Home
It was a tough night for the North Central Missouri College basketball teams on Wednesday as Johnson County Community College rolled into Trenton and picked up a sweep. The Lady Pirates were defeated 80-55 and the Pirates lost 78-77.
The North Central women had their hands full with undefeated Johnson County and when the final buzzer sounded the visitors were 11-0 on the year.
Rebounds proved to be where the game was won. The Lady Pirates yielded 24 points on offensive rebounds by Johnson County.
“We did some things right, but we have to do a better job on the defensive boards,” Lady Pirates’ Head Coach Jenni Croy said. “We would get a stop on defense, but we would give up the rebound and they consistently scored on put-backs.”
The Lady Pirates (4-5) were led by Brooke Parton, who scored 13 points. Samone Redditt added 11 and Nancy Berwanger hit double figures as well for the Lady Pirates, scoring 10.
The North Central men lost a painful game by a single point. The Pirates trailed 32-29 at the break, but rallied to take a six-point lead with around three minutes left in the game. Johnson County hit some big shots to battle back, but the biggest shot was a tip-in after a missed shot with six seconds left that gave the visitors a one-point edge. The Pirates had a three to win it at the buzzer, but the ball rimmed in and out and gave Johnson County the victory.
“As soon as we learn how to win games we could be a pretty good team,” Pirates’ Head Coach Steve Richman said. “We just need to catch a break. Good teams can create breaks and as soon as we do that, we should be in pretty good shape.”
The Pirates (4-6) were led by Xavier Newson, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds. Tyrell Thirkield collected 17 points and six steals and Tyler Peterson added 13 points and five rebounds.
Both NCMC teams play Friday. The Lady Pirates host Barton County Community College in Trenton and the Pirates play in Lamoni, IA against the Graceland University junior varsity. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Pirates are also at home on Saturday, playing host to Marshalltown Community College at 2 p.m.
