Trenton Pounds Chillicothe 10-0
The Trenton Lady Bulldogs made a statement on Monday night in their final game before the district tournament. Trenton smashed Chillicothe 10-0 in five innings on Johnson Field, wrapping up the regular season with a 14-4 record overall.
Trenton did the majority of its damage in the second inning, where the Lady Bulldogs plated eight of their 10 runs. Makaila Capeder and Cassidy Cotton led off the inning with back-to-back doubles, Cotton’s scoring Capeder for the game’s first run. Ally Ockenfels followed with a walk and Lexie Tolson reached on an error that scored Cotton. Whitley Richman singled to score Ockenfels, pushing Trenton’s advantage over their rivals to 3-0. After a McKinley Hurley single loaded the bases, Chillicothe uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Tolson and Richman. Madi Trump followed with a walk and then Capeder delivered her second hit of the inning, a single, that scored Hurley. Megan Lynch would finish the eight-run outburst with a double that scored Trump and Capeder.
The Lady Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning when Tosha Wilson reached on an error and scored on an RBI triple by Trump. Mallory Hooyman drove in the game’s 10th run with a single.
Trenton’s offense was paced by Capeder, who was two-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI. Lynch was one-for-three with two RBIs and Trump was one-for-two with a run scored and an RBI. Hurley and Cotton each had a hit and a run scored and Richman drove in one run and scored another. Ockenfels had two walks and a run scored and Tolson finished with an RBI and a run scored.
While Trenton was scoring runs left and right, Chillicothe was struggling mightily at the plate against Lady Bulldogs’ windmiller Daryian Otto. Otto threw all five frames, allowing no runs on just two hits while striking out five.
“This was a good game for us going into districts,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach John Cowling said. “We played well in every area of the game, especially offensively. Daryian did a good job keeping their hitters off balance and our defense backed her up.”
The Lady Bulldogs will begin district play on Thursday, playing the winner of Wednesday’s match-up between Chillicothe and Excelsior Springs. Thursday’s Trenton game will be played at 4:30 in Chillicothe.
The junior varsity was also victorious over Chillicothe Monday night, winning 6-3 in their season finale. Hurley was the winning pitcher, going two and a third innings and allowing no runs on no hits while striking out four. Richman started the game, going one and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs on one hit while striking out two.
Shayla Woodside led the way at the plate, going two-for-two with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Hannah Kennebeck added a triple, an RBI and a run scored and Mason Hooyman had a double and a run scored. Tenna Roberts drove in two runs, Roya Cox had an RBI double, Abby Miller had an RBI single and Katerina Black, Emily Lynch and Maggie McNabb all scored a run.
With the win, the JV finished their season with a 8-1-1 record.
