Grundy Takes Second In State Tourney
The Grundy R-5 boys softball team was in action at the state tournament over the weekend, placing second in the eight-team field. Grundy advanced to the title game with a 17-2 quarterfinal win over East Harrison and a 9-7 semifinal win over Jefferson. Winston put an end to Grundy’s run in the championship, however, defeating the Panthers 15-1.
In the opener, Grundy cruised past East Harrison in three innings. Elliott O’Neal led the Panthers with three hits and Cade Mullenix, Destin Gann, Stuart Eller and Clayton Radcliff all had two hits.
In the semifinals, Grundy found itself trailing 5-0 entering the bottom of the second inning, but the Panthers rallied back to tie the game. Jefferson re-took the lead at 6-5, but a three-run sixth inning pushed the Panthers ahead for good. Gann and Mullenix had three hits each and Eller, Mason Larson and Tanner Hudson all had two hits each.
With the two wins, Grundy stormed into the championship game. One bad inning doomed the Panthers’ hopes of a title, however. Grundy opened the second inning with three-straight errors and Winston took full advantage, plating 10 runs in the frame.
“The championship game all came down to the second inning,” Panthers’ Head Coach Les Jackson said. “We had three errors to begin the inning and things just kind of snowballed after that. A combination of their hitting and our sloppy defense led to a 10-run inning for Winston.”
Offensively, Grundy couldn’t find its groove, tallying just three hits in the game.
With the 2-1 showing, however, Grundy finished the season 9-4 and second in the state.
“Other than that one inning, I thought the boys had an outstanding tournament,” Jackson said. “I’m really proud of their second-place finish.”
