Chili and pie were the order of the day on Saturday as the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce and Trenton Police Department sponsored the Five Points Chili Cookoff and Pie Baking Contest. There were 12 teams participating in the chili cookoff while 22 pies were entered in the first-ever baking contest. Pictured above is Robert Stephens, a member of the Three Amigos Chili Company that captured first place in the homestyle chili competition. At right, Bonita Price, Linda Eads and Jill Ferguson prepare pies for judging. In the chili cookoff, winners in the homestyle included the Three Amigos, first; Crime Scream (TPD), second; and Simply Chili (Sam and Cathie Smith), third. CASI style winners were Kevin Stovall of Lee’s Summit, first; Cindy Stovall of Lee’s Summit, second; and Geri Downy of Kansas City, third. The Trenton Police Department won the people’s choice award while the taster’s award went to Hillbilly Chili (Ralph Boots and Mark Robinson). The business winner was Con-Agra. Winners in the pie judging were, Charlene Smith, first with a pecan pie; Kathryn Morrison, second with an apple french crust pie; and Janice Huffstutter, third with a strawberry rhubarb pie. The people’s choice winners were Rhonda Chaverri, first with a carmel apple pie; Crystal Whitaker, second with a brownie pie; and Barb Peterson, third with a blackberry pie. All winners were from Trenton.
