Middle Schoolers Rout Panthers
The Trenton Middle School football team rolled to a 48-0 rout of the Polo Panthers Tuesday night at C.F. Russell Stadium, bouncing back from a disappointing loss in week one.
Head Coach Brandon Boswell was looking to improve on two areas entering the game, decreasing turnovers and increasing time of possession. The Bulldogs delivered on both counts.
Trenton opened the scoring in the first quarter when Kylen Wilkenson ran the ball across the goal line from eight yards out, starting what would be a big night for himself. Wilkenson would score another eight-yard touchdown in the third quarter and returned a punt 53 yards for a touchdown, also in the third quarter. Avery Cooksey recorded a 17-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Mason Owen hit Cameron Murray on a 26-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. The Bulldogs’ final touchdown of the game came in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard run by Brian Ewing.
Cooksey ran in two-point conversions following every Bulldog score but the last one, where Hayden Griffin recorded the two. That gave Trenton the win by the final score of 48-0.
Trenton’s defense was outstanding and didn’t allow Polo a first down until the Panthers’ final possession in the game.
The strong offensive performance by Trenton was keyed by a dominating effort up front by the offensive line.
“We played really well tonight as a team,” Boswell said. “The offensive line was phenomenal and we wouldn’t have been nearly as successful without them. I’m proud of our kids and coaches, both.”
The win evened the middle schoolers’ record at 1-1 overall. Trenton will travel to Maryville for a tough test on Thursday, Sept. 26. Kickoff between the Spoofhounds and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m.
